Please consider joining this excellent fundraising activity for our parish and application forms for the 2021/2022 year are at the back of each church. New members are very welcome (and you can have as many numbers as you like!).
X RIDE AND STRIDE – on Saturday September 11, the Friends of Kent Churches (FoKC) is holding its annual fund raising event, "Ride and Stride".
It is basically a tour of local churches through which volunteers raise money for a grant making initiative dedicated to the upkeep of church buildings and is also a great and fun thing to do. Funds are raised by sponsorship. From each Sponsor, 50% goes to FoKC to build up the grant making pot, 50% is returned to the Volunteer's Church. Sponsorship money is not only raised by the adventurous making the Grand Tours, but by church based 'Reception Teams' who offer consolation, encouragement, a cuppa and chance for a 'natural break' to the weary travellers!
For sponsorship forms and listing of participating churches etc., see Pat Goldsmith or Steve Press. Alternatively, visit the Ride and Stride website at: www.kentrideandstride.co.uk.
X CHURCH MAKEOVER AT OUR LADY, HELP OF CHRISTIANS AND ST ALOYSIUS – the cleaners, plasterers, painters, waxers, electricians, sound engineers, lighting technicians, and repairers have been hard at work since 2nd August repairing the church and carrying out vital maintenance and redecoration.
Unfortunately, there have been a few problems discovered along the way including some corrosion of the lead on the windows which has weakened some of the concrete around the frames. We have also discovered damp areas at the back of the altar which have had to be fixed as a matter of urgency including repointing the outside wall and replacing some of the lead lined broken windows. The overall cost is now around £35,000, including recent roofing work, and we urgently need to raise more funds to cover the cost of this work. To date we have raised £12,917 so please pray together that we can make our target and pay for the work being undertaken.
A big THANK YOU to the ladies of the UCM who spent a morning last week cleaning the Stations of the Cross with mineral spirits and then polishing them furiously to make them outstanding once again.
The new speakers have now been installed and I hope parishioners will notice an improved sound, however, we are awaiting the arrival of a new mixing desk and new wireless microphones.
When all this work is done, we can then begin focusing on the work needed at St Joseph’s. Thank you to everyone who has generously donated to make this happen. The second collection to support this work held on Sunday 8th August raised over one thousand pounds.
You can also donate via cheque payable to
“The Parish of Our Lady and St Joseph, Folkestone” and placed an envelope
marked ‘Renovation Appeal’ and posted through the Parish Office door at the
Presbytery at 41 Guildhall Street on any day or via bank transfer to The Parish
of Our Lady and St Joseph Folkestone, Sort Code 52-41-42 and Account Number
08605556 with the reference ‘Renovation’.
Alternatively, you can use our Just Giving
page online, a link is on our parish website, which allows for payments to be
made by credit and debit card or by PayPal with no fees, and also to be gift
aided via the diocese at

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
Sunday 15th August
On Sunday 15th August, in addition to Mass at the churches of Our Lady in Folkestone and St Joseph’s in Cheriton, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered at the Vatican by Cardinal Peter Turkson, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development. An intention has been submitted for all those who have suffered during the pandemic and for the Parish of Our Lady and St Joseph.
HAIL, HOLY QUEEN
Hail,
holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,
Our life,
our sweetness and our hope.
To
thee do we cry, poor banished children of
Eve.
To thee do we send up our sighs,
mourning
and weeping in this vale of
tears.
Turn then, most gracious Advocate,
thine
eyes of mercy toward us, and after
this,
our exile, show unto us the blessed
fruit
of thy womb, Jesus: O clement,
O
loving, O sweet Virgin Mary!
Pray
for us O Holy Mother of God,
that
we may be made worthy of
the
promises of Christ.
Amen.
