X WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES 2021 - The 107th World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2021 is celebrated on 26th September - the last Sunday of the month. The Holy Father has chosen the theme 'Towards an ever wider "we"'. The Church has been celebrating the World Day of Migrants and Refugees (WDMR) since 1914. It’s always an occasion to express concern for different vulnerable people on the move; to pray for them as they face many challenges; and to increase awareness about the opportunities that migration offers. The Vatican has a dedicated section for Migrants and Refugees at https://migrants-refugees.va/

It is directed personally by Pope Francis and aims to help the Church, and others, to accompany those forced to flee and make sure they are not shut out or left behind.

X UCM BRING AND BUY SALE - SUNDAY, 26TH SEPTEMBER - we will be having a UCM Bring & Buy sale plus cake stall after both Sunday Masses on 26th September. The proceeds from the sale will be going towards helping World Day of Migrants and Refugees.

X GET YOUR BACON BUTTIES – in St Joseph’s Church Hall after the 9.00am Sunday Mass this week as part of the ‘Sunriser breakfast’ offering. Also, bacon butties will now be available after the 9.00am Sunday Mass at OLHoC too, to coincide with the UCM Bring and Buy sale. Remember also to observe the Eucharistic Fast. Canon Law states ‘A person who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour before holy communion from any food and drink, except for only water and medicine’.

X CONFIRMATION – are you in Year 8 or above and not yet confirmed? Do you have a child, grandchild or godchild in Year 8 or above who has not yet received the Sacrament of Confirmation?

Please contact Fr Alex on 01303 252823 or email folkestone@rcaos.org.uk or speak to him after Mass to learn and find out what you need to do to help you or your child to be confirmed. Again, anyone who is interested, you must let Fr Alex know before the end of half-term week on Friday 29th October.

X AFTERNOON TEA AT ST JOSEPH’S on Friday 1st October in St Joseph’s Church Hall at 2.30pm costing just £3.00 per head. Come and join us from across the parish for tea and a chat.

X OL&SJ 100 CLUB  DRAW – The next draw will be after the 11.00am Sunday Mass today.

X JOURNEY IN FAITH/RCIA (RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULT)

- Are you a Baptised non-confirmed Catholic?

- Are you a Baptised non-Catholic?

- Are you thinking about converting to the Catholic faith?

– Are you a Catholic who wants to know more about the faith?

This is something you can do and encourage others to do too. The new group will start after half-term on Monday 1st November and we will link classes to the school calendar year and term time only. Please call or get in touch with Fr Alex on 01303 252823 or folkestone@rcaos.org.uk or speak to Fr Alex after Mass or make an appointment at the Catholic Presbytery at Guildhall Street and he will tell all you wish to know about becoming a Catholic or learning more about the Catholic faith. The enrolment starts now and will conclude on Friday 29th October.

X FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST HOLY COMMUNION - if you have seriously taken up the commitment you and your child’s Godparents made on the day your child was baptised, the child will be familiar with Mass, maybe children’s liturgy, and will understand at least something about prayer. Whether you have enrolled your child in a Catholic school or in a non-Catholic school, your regular attendance at Mass will help judge your child’s readiness for the preparation before the celebration of the First Sacrament of Reconciliation, First Confession and First Holy Communion. Thus, the Catholic Church in England and Wales suggests that from year 3 upward, any baptised child who reaches the age of 8yrs can enrol for the preparation of these two sacraments of initiation. Contact Fr Alex on 01303 253824 or email folkestone@rcaos.org.uk to arrange an appointment to discuss your child’s arrangements to enrol for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion

More information about Baptism and First Reconciliation, First Confession and First Holy Communion is available on the Parish website at

http://catholic-folkestone.blogspot.com under the Sacramental Preparation tab.

X FIRST FRIDAY DEVOTION is before Mass on Friday 1st October at Our Lady, Help of Christians at 9.00am with the intention of honouring Christ’s Sacred Heart. The month of October each year is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary, which we will be doing every weekday before Mass during October, except on a Wednesday and Saturday when you are encouraged to do it at home instead.

X The SVP was started by Frederic Ozanam, a Sorbonne Professor, as a result of the plague epidemic of Paris in the 1830s. He was inspired by Vincent de Paul who, in 1620s ministered to, among others, the galley slaves of Marseilles.

Our parish's SVP Group (or 'Conference') has been going nearly 30 years. Fairly regularly, we receive appeals for help from those who don't know where to turn such as:

  • Single Parents falling foul of the Benefit System.
  • The Homeless needing help with setting up a home of their own.
  • Evictees needing help moving.
  • The lonely and vulnerable.

Because September 9th is Ozanam's Feast Day, and September 27th is the Feast Day of St Vincent de Paul, and because C19 restrictions have been lifted, we are making an effort to 'build back better'. Basically, we need more Members who will help with those crises needing a rapid response, and the longer commitments of visiting and befriending. We also need people who can donate to help with food vouchers, a decent suit for a job interview, a microwave etc.

Contact our Conference Officers Liz Willis, Sara Adams or Steve Press if you'd like to know more. Or browse www.svp.org.uk

X PLEASE PRAY FOR THE REPOSE OF THE SOULS of the relatives and friends of our parishioners who have died recently including Mike Deacon. Mike was an active member of St. Joseph’s for many years and was much loved.  He suffered ill health recently and died last week. We pray for his family and friends who will miss him so much.  Also pray for all those whose anniversaries fall at this time, including amongst them: Else McSwiggan, Peter Pasternack, John Barry, Edgar Le Frenais, Pauline Waddell, Margaret Bateson, Susan Badiali, Mary Norman, Father Peter Rolph (26th Sept); Mary Heath (27th Sept); Jim Austin, Margaret Knevett (28th Sept); Ida Toseland, Elizabeth Harry, Fr Kevin  Fitzgerald (29th Sept); Ka Yin Chan (30th Sept); Eileen Milne, Kevin Sheridan, John Dempsey (1st October); Eileen Cotton, Capt Peter Scott, Christine Horsfall (2nd Oct); Edward Hughes (3rd Oct).
