X SEASON OF CREATION: “A HOME FOR ALL? RENEWING THE OIKOS OF GOD” - The ecumenical celebration of the 2021 Season of Creation—themed “A home for all? Renewing the Oikos of God”—runs from 1 September, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, through 4 October, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology.
During this annual celebration of prayer and action for our common home, Christians across the globe will come together for a time of restoration and hope, and to discover radically new ways of living with creation.
Pope Francis invites participation
Pope Francis has called on Catholics to take action for our common home during the Season of Creation. In the Pope Video for the month of September, he encourages everyone to question the way we live, and to turn “towards lifestyles that are simpler and more respectful of the environment.”
The Holy Father has also stressed that the “cry of the earth and the cry of the poor are becoming increasingly serious and alarming,” urging Catholics to take “decisive, urgent action to transform this crisis into an opportunity.”
The 2021 Season of Creation comes just a few weeks before the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), scheduled to take place from November 1-12 in Glasgow, Scotland. It also comes on the heels of a dismal, recently-released UN climate report which makes it clear that we are running out of time to avert the worst effects of the ecological crisis and the climate emergency.

Healthy Planet, Healthy people Petition
In addition to individual and communal efforts during the Season of Creation, the Laudato Si’ Movement is inviting Christians to advocate for the least among us by signing the “Healthy planet, Healthy People” petition at https://thecatholicpetition.org ahead of the COP 26 meeting, in order to tell “world leaders how they should care for God’s creation.”
In this regard, Monsignor Bruno-Marie Duffé, the former Secretary for the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, invited Catholics to promote the petition, noting that “this Season of Creation will also be a critical moment for Catholics to lift up the voices of the most vulnerable and advocate on their behalf.”
X CATHOLIC UNION CALLS FOR SPENDING ON WELFARE TO BE MAINTAINED BY THE GOVERNMENT - The Catholic Union (CU) has urged the Chancellor not to cut spending on social security this year as the uplift in Universal Credit and Working Tax Credits is due to end.
The Catholic Union has described the £20 uplift as a “lifeline” to millions of people during the pandemic, but the Chancellor has said the policy will only last until the end of this month. The decision to increase payments has been estimated by the Office of Budget Responsibility to have cost the Treasury an additional £6 billion per year on welfare spending.
The Chancellor announced
the uplift in March last year to “strengthen the safety net” for those facing
financial hardship as a result of Covid.
The Catholic Union has
argued that the increase in spending should be maintained to help struggling
families recover from the pandemic. The Centre for Social Justice has estimated
that family breakdown costs the taxpayer £51 billion per year. In a letter to Chancellor, the Catholic Union
has called for the uplift to be maintained or for the cost of the uplift to be
spent on tax breaks and spending to support families, such as scrapping the
two-child cap on the childcare element of Universal Credit and Working Tax
Credits.
The Catholic Church teaches
that the poor represent those who are marginalised in society. Jesus himself
taught the importance of helping those who are poor and in need and to speak
out for those in need.
The Catholic Union was founded in 1870. It is a membership organisation dedicated to the defence of Catholic values and is the consistent voice of the Catholic laity which works to promote Catholic social teaching by working with the Bishops’ conference and Parliament. All Catholics are welcome and membership details are available at https://catholicunion.org.uk/join-us/
X THE POPE’S PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR SEPTEMBER 2021 - An environmentally sustainable lifestyle We pray that we all will make courageous choices for a simple and environmentally sustainable lifestyle, rejoicing in our young people who are resolutely committed to this.
X THANK YOU AND GOODBYE TO FATHER LOUIS KOUEVI – Fr Alex has returned home safely from his trip to Africa and Fr Louis will be going back to his parish at St Joseph’s in Roehampton, after celebrating his last Mass here on Monday 6th September. Everyone has enjoyed having Fr Louis in the parish with his jovial and loving approach and he wanted to express his thanks to everyone who has made him so very welcome here.
“Our lives begin to end the day we become SILENT about things that Matter.” Martin Luther King Jr.
X PLEASE PRAY for all those who are sick or unwell at this time especially for Francis Dunn is critically ill in hospital.
