LENT BEGINS THIS WEDNESDAY (17th FEBRUARY) - There will be Mass and Ashing at Our Lady, Help of Christians at 10.00am, at St Joseph’s at 12.00 noon and again at Our Lady, Help of Christians at 7.00pm.

Following the Letter from the Congregation for Divine Worship regarding the Distribution of Ashes on Ash Wednesday, advice from Public Health England, through the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, is that the recommended method of distributing ashes is to bless the ashes at the usual point in the Liturgy and leave them until the end of Mass.

At the end of Mass the blessed ashes will be sprinkled over the heads of people after you are invited to come up to the front of the church in the same way as when you come up for communion or a blessing. You will then need to follow the one-way system to leave the church. Care will be taken to avoid hand to head contact and also that there is no contact with the faithful and the minister’s vesture. The professional Public Health advice passed from the Bishops’ Conference informs us that it is unlikely that ash would be on a person’s head long enough to pick up enough contaminated fluid bearing the virus from skin to then infect someone.

If anyone has any concern about receiving ashes at this time, please be reassured, that it is not compulsory this year.

ATTENDANCE AT MASS – We continue to have Mass every day in our Parish and you are all very welcome to attend.

·       Covid-19 may be spread most easily in enclosed spaces. We would ask that you respect social distancing at all times and wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth.

·       Please leave the church as soon as possible after Mass has finished.

·       Please do not sit next to, or mix, with anyone outside of your household or support bubble.

·       If you are in a vulnerable category, please think very carefully before coming to Mass. The Sunday obligation is still suspended.

·       The use of public transport is not recommended at present, so please consider alternative ways of getting home if at all possible.

We appreciate that these requests are contrary to our usual instincts and desires, but you will have witnessed the local news and the current strain ion the NHS. We have a duty to keep ourselves and others safe. Thank you.

DON’T FORGET

NEXT SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 21ST, THE 9.00AM SUNDAY MASS IS AT ST JOSEPH’S

NAPIER BARRACKSpressure to close Napier Barracks has increased this week as Ministers have fended off criticism from MPs over housing asylum seekers at Napier Barracks, insisting it is safe, secure and is better value than hotels – and failing to clarify how long it will be used. Minister Chris Philp was put on the spot in the House of Commons this week when questioned by Folkestone and Hythe’s MP, Damian Collins, in the wake of a serious fire at the Folkestone site a week ago.

Meanwhile, Church leaders have written an open letter to the Home Secretary calling for Napier Barracks to close. The letter has been signed by more than 30 leaders from across many denominations including Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster.

A PLEA FOR SUPPORT TO A SYRIAN FAMILY - A Syrian refugee family that Deacon Gehad looks after, need help with their children’s studies, in the form of computers.

The school sends to the two older children aged 13 and 11, their classroom work onto their mother's mobile phone, but they find it difficult to cope with.

It would help them tremendously if they each had their own laptop or PC to allow them to carry on with their studies.

If you have an old laptop or desktop pc that you don't need anymore, please contact Deacon Gehad on 01303 253601 or 07917 134 250. Thank you in advance for your generous help.
