X SS PETER & PAUL IS ON TUESDAY THIS WEEK, (June 29th) - please remember that this is a Holy Day of Obligation! There are Masses in the morning at both churches and an evening Mass at OLHoC at 7.30am.
X FINANCE COUNCIL MEETING REPORT – the new Finance Council met last Tuesday to discuss the ongoing financial difficulty we are facing (so far this year we are running at a loss of nearly £9,000, although this is due to some higher cost planned maintenance works being done) and to look at the urgently needed current and future works programme.
St Joseph’s: so far this year over £3,000 has been spent on work needed for the drains, patching the roof and the outer window frames which had deteriorated and to undertake a structural survey. In the next week, an additional £600 will be spent on urgently required electrical safety works in the church, hall and presbytery which were identified following a Diocesan inspection.
Future work needed at St Joseph’s over the next year includes up to £50,000 on a new church roof, £50,000 to make the presbytery safe and habitable again, and up to £20,000 on replacing the boiler and moving to an alternative fuel source from the current oil heating in the church. Work will also be done to put new guards around the existing radiators in the church.
Our Lady, Help of Christians and St Aloysius: over the past year we have spent nearly £1,000 on a new stable door for the shop which allowed it to continue trading despite Covid restrictions, and £7,000 on replacing the guttering around the church and repairing the roof which was leaking in a number of places.
Future works planned are for approximately £10,000 to redecorate the church and sacristy in the first week of August when the walls will be washed, filled where necessary and two coats of paint applied. The stained glass windows will be cleaned and all the lower wood panelling in the church will be cleaned and waxed. Also in August, the presbytery will have a new shower room installed to replace the very old bath which is currently being used. The presbytery will also need repairs done to the windows and window frames which need to be managed carefully as it is a listed building. The total cost of these works will be around £3,000. Also taking place in the summer will be improvements to the exterior lighting of the church in the side alley and around the hall which will be updated at a cost of approximately £1,500 and there will be works done around the church, hall and the car park including new parking lines in thermal plastic, side gate refurbishment and new signage around the premises at a cost of approximately £2,500.
We hope to refurbish the damaged toilet hall windows further into the future and also adapt the old disabled toilet in the hall into an office as the new toilets are now adapted for disabled use. The final huge task at OLHoC will be to replace the failing lighting in the church and we expect this to cost up to £25,000. We are also planning to replace the old carpet on the altar.
Costs and Fundraising: the total cost of the work is estimated to be in the region of £175,000 to £200,000. We have the ongoing appeal and have raised some money through generous grants and promised donations for specific work that we have received, but this will be a huge task to get the work done and the money raised to do it. So far, we have got grants of £2,000 and our appeal has raised an additional £11,000.
