X TWO IMPORTANT DATES NEXT WEEK  - on Friday 5th May, Mass will be offered in all parishes for the Coronation of King Charles II. This Mass will be at 10.00am.

Then on Sunday 7th May we have our open air Mass on Stella Maris School’s field at 11.00am. Let us continue to pray for good weather and also for an enjoyable and faith filled experience for all participants. I thank in advance all those who are working hard for the success of the Mass and celebration – we encourage people also to bring their outdoor chairs or blankets, as seating is available but may possibly run out, so those people who bring additional seating will be very helpful and handy.  Remember there is no 9.00am Sunday mass next week so see you all on Sunday 7th May at 11.00am.

X DO YOU PAY TAX ON YOUR EARNINGS? Join the Gift Aid scheme where the parish can claim your tax back on what you give to the church. This is only possible if you become part of our Gift Aid scheme. It will not cost you a penny but for every pound you give, the parish will get an additional 20p from the Government. If you’re interested, please talk to George and the team, who will be speaking at all Masses on Sunday, for further details and a Gift Aid form or standing order request.

Remember, it doesn’t cost you any more money but is a big source of revenue for the parish amounting to thousands of pounds.

X MONTH OF MAY It is the month that marks the beginning of the six apparitions of Our Lady to the three shepherd children of Fatima: Lucy, Francisco and Jacinta.

The following is the request of Our Lady at each of the apparitions:

  1. May 13th 1917 – say the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world and an end to war.
  2. June 13th 1917 – I want you to continue to say the Rosary every day.
  3. July 13th 1917 – I want you to continue to say the Rosary every day in honour of Our Lady of the Rosary to obtain peace for the world and an end to war because only she can help you.
  4. August 13th 1917 – I want you to say the Rosary every day.
  5. September 13th 1917 – continue to say the Rosary every day in order to obtain an end to the war.
  6. October 13th 1917 – I am the Lady of the Rosary. I want you always to say the Rosary every day.

Our Lady asks Lucy to spread/propagate the first Saturday’s Devotion in these terms: “You at least, could console me by telling all those who, for the first Saturdays of five consecutive months, go to confession, receive Holy Communion, say the Rosary and keep me company meditating for 15 minutes on the 15 mysteries of the Holy Rosary in order to console me. I promise to help at the honour of their death with all the necessary graces for salvation.” [Mary’s great promise at Fatima].

X SECOND COLLECTION for the Ecclesiastical Education and the Priest Training Fund.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

This Sunday 30th April, ‘Good Shepherd Sunday’, there will be the usual Diocesan second collection for the Priest Training Fund. This fund pays for the formation of men to become priests in our Archdiocese and to continue and build upon that work which you do now.

My first appointment after ordination was in St Joseph’s in Pontefract in Yorkshire, and shortly after arriving in the parish the Parish Priest said to me, ‘Try to be an extension of the love of Christ in the service of His people.’ We need to pray for young men to come forward to be priests, who will be extensions of the love of Christ in the service of His people, here in the Church of Southwark. To support them, they will need care and formation in how to stay close to Christ; how to draw others to Christ; how to be Christ’s loving presence in a challenging world: a world where they will care compassionately for the sick and the dying, for the broken and the distressed; a world in which they will proclaim boldly the Gospel of Life, and celebrate reverently the Sacraments of Love.

We are blessed to have 3 men already in formation for the Priesthood for our Archdiocese. It costs £30,000 a year to sponsor each seminarian. We rely on the prayers and generosity of you and your parishioners to support our work promoting vocations in Southwark and to fund the formation of our future priests.

Please continue your prayers, that the Lord will raise up shepherds, and please give the Priest Training Fund second collection the attention it deserves.

The Most Reverend John Wilson

Archbishop of Southwark

X OFFETORY COLLECTION – the collection last week raised a total of £591.35 and £195.62 in the second collection for the maintenance of St George’s Cathedral.

X RAINBOW CENTRE SPONSORED KNIT-IN. A big thank you to everyone who supported this event, knitters, cashiers, tea/coffee makers, hostesses, pianist, sponsors – the amount raised was £4193 with £334 still to come in. We were joined by teams of knitters from other churches/organisations and a great afternoon was had by all. If you sponsored a knitter and have yet to pay – now is the time to do so. Thank you again.

X PENTECOST CELEBRATION – a date for your diary, Sunday 28th May, there will be a celebration after the 11.00am Mass featuring food from all over the world!

X AFTERNOON TEA TO CELEBRATE THE CORONATION – come and join us on the bank holiday Monday, 8th May, at 2.30pm at St Joseph’s Church Hall to celebrate the coronation of King Charles II with a high tea fit for a King.

Costs are £6 per adult and £3 per child.  Call Margaret Irving on 01303 278435 to book your place.

X VOTING IN THE LOCAL ELECTIONS ON THURSDAY 4TH MAY – if you vote in person rather than by using a postal vote at the elections, then please be aware of the new rules coming in. You will be required to show photo ID at the polling station before you can vote. So please remember to take yours along with you.

Tens of thousands of couples headed for divorce have successfully saved their marriages by attending and using the tools provided. The programme helps spouses uncover or re-awaken the love, trust and commitment that originally brought them together. X PARISH SECRETARY VACANCY - Despite the fact that we have started the interviews, we would be pleased to hear from anyone who may have missed the deadline to also come forward, especially Parishioners with relevant office, secretarial and administration experience to assist our Parish Priest with the smooth running of our Parish. This is a part time role requiring two 4-hour shifts a week, 10am – 2pm on a Monday and on a Friday, although there may be some flexibility for the right candidate. Payment will be £10.42/hour. This is an interesting, varied and rewarding job, involving secretarial, financial data entry, purchasing, office organisation and management, along with Parish committee and volunteer liaison.

Anyone interested in discussing or learning more about this opportunity, are encouraged to kindly contact Fr Alex on either 01303 252823 or by email at folkestone@rcaos.org.uk

X REQUIEM MASS OF BRIAN DONLAN this Friday at 10.00am is the Requiem mass for Brian Donlan and our thoughts are with Gerardine and all the family. All are welcome to attend and there will be refreshments afterwards provided in the hall by the Beacon Plus team. Again all are very welcome to attend this Mass and the refreshments afterwards.

May Brian Rest in Peace and Rise in Glory.

X NEXT WEEKEND’S SECOND COLLECTION WILL BE FOR THE PRIEST TRAING FUND - the priesthood has always been essential to the life of the Church, from the time of Jesus until today.  Good Shepherd Sunday is the day we pray for vocations, for our priests, and take up the Priest Training Fund second collection. This fund pays for the formation of men to become priests in our Archdiocese.

After their ordination, our priests dedicate their lives to serving Christ and His people in our parishes, hospitals, schools, chaplaincies, prisons and in service to the needy, throughout South London, Kent and Surrey.  We are blessed to have 3 men in formation to the Priesthood for our Archdiocese. However, it costs £30,000 a year to sponsor each seminarian. They study for 6 years before being ordained a Catholic priest.

We therefore rely on your generous support and prayers. Please support our priests of the future with a gift today.

Thank you!

  • Telephone weekdays 9 am – 5 pm: 020 7960 2504
  • Cash / Cheque – please use the Priest Training Fund envelopes at the back of church.

X DO YOU PAY TAX ON YOUR EARNINGS? Something we don’t enjoy but we have to do. Well the good news is that if you do pay tax you can join the Gift Aid scheme where the parish can claim your tax back on what you give to the church. This is only possible if you become part of our Gift Aid scheme. It will not cost you a penny but for every pound you give, the parish will get an additional 20p from the Government. If you’re interested, please talk to Dylan, George or enquire at the office for a Gift Aid form.

Remember, it doesn’t cost you any more money but is a big source of revenue for the parish amounting to thousands of pounds.

X MASS ON THE FIELD - SUNDAY MASS ON 7TH MAY 2023 will be our Parish Mass on the field at Stella Maris School for Our Lady, Help of Christians and St Joseph the Worker at 11.00am. After the celebration of Mass, it is hoped that many of you will stay for a picnic – bring along your food and blankets/chairs. There will be some seating available, also teas and coffees. There will be no 9.00am Mass at OLHoC that day. For those unable to attend, there will be a Saturday evening Mass, as per usual, at 6.00pm on 6th May at OLHoC.

Bring your own chairs and blankets to the Mass on the field as limited seating will be available. There will be tea and coffee provided afterwards and all are encouraged to stay and bring your own picnic to have after the Mass.
