X RACIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY is this Sunday and the theme is “In the Image and Likeness of God” celebrating different representations of the Holy Family from different countries and cultures.
You are encouraged to mark the day by praying the words of Pope Francis taken from his encyclical letter Fratelli Tutti – on fraternity and social friendship:
Come, Holy Spirit, show us your beauty,
reflected in all the peoples of the earth,
so that we may discover anew
that all are important and all are necessary,
different faces of the one humanity
that God so loves.
Amen.
There will also be a second collection this Sunday to support the work of the Catholic Church to promote racial justice in our schools, parishes and in wider society.
X PLEASE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO ARE SICK OR IN HOSPITAL including Margaret Woolley, who is gradually improving after a serious fall and is in hospital; Lilian Orfila, who was discharged from hospital on Thursday but is still very frail and recovering from heart problems; Yenny Marcela Torres, who is only 33 with stomach cancer and for Margaret Foster who is undergoing treatment for cancer.
X SHEPWAY FOOD BANK – a reminder that
you can continue to give generously to our food bank donation points. You can
also donate cash during February via the box at St Joseph’s marked ‘Peter’s
Pence or via the poor box located at the back of the church at OLHoC in
Guildhall Street or the Peter’s Pence box located at the back of St Joseph’s
church. All money collected this month, until the end of February, will be
split between the Foodbank and the Winter Shelter.
X TEA AND COFFEE IN THE HALL AFTER SUNDAY MASS – will resume this week on Sundays in addition to refreshments after Wednesday morning’s Mass which returned last week. Bacon and egg rolls are served after the 9.00am Mass for those that are peckish and there is tea, coffee, biscuits, cake and chat served after the 11.00am Mass and on Wednesday.
X PARISH FINANCE COUNCIL MEETING will take place on Thursday 24th February in the OLHoC Hall starting at 7.00pm. There is one vacancy on the council. If you are interested in filling the vacancy, please talk to Fr Alex.
X NO MASS ON TUESDAYS – please note that for the foreseeable future, there will be no Mass on Tuesdays in the Parish. However, the church at OLHoC in Guildhall Street will continue to open for private prayer on Tuesday mornings.
X LOOKING AHEAD – Ash Wednesday is on Wednesday 2nd March. There will be Mass with Distribution of Ashes at OLHoC at 9.30am, at St Joseph’s at 12 noon and at OLHoC at 7.00pm. The next meeting of the Parish UCM will take place on Ash Wednesday in OLHoC Hall after Mass at around 10.30am.
X CATECHISM CLASSES will resume next week, after half-term, on Monday 21st February at 7.30pm in OLHoC Hall. Classes are open to all who want to explore their Catholic faith further.
X LENT TALKS - COULD YOU HELP? We’re looking at putting on a series of 5 sessions in Lent on Our Lady, using a Catholic Faith Exploration series called “Let it be”. There would be a 25-minute film each week, followed by reflection and discussion.
To make it accessible to the greater number of participants, we’re looking at evening sessions, 7.30pm to 9.00pm, with transport provided for those who need it.
We need some helpers to
- ·
Set
out (and put away afterwards) chairs and tables and act as welcomers
- ·
Organise
refreshments
- ·
Organise
a focal point
- ·
Offer
lifts to those without transport
- ·
Help
with discussion groups
Would you be able to help with any of these? If so, please contact John Philpott by text, ‘phone or e-mail: 01303 258962 / 07956 433004 / johnrphilpott@btinternet.com
The course would run on Thursday evenings, alternating between our two church halls in the parish. Thank you in advance and in the next few weeks we’ll give you more information!
X CLERGY SUPPORT FUND SECOND COLLECTION NEXT SUNDAY – the Clergy Support Fund of the Archdiocese of Southwark provides care for priests in their old age and retirement and in their time of ill health. A gift to this worthy fund will ensure a dignified retirement for out priests, after they have dedicated a lifetime of service to Christ, His Church and His People.
In 2021, the Clergy Support Fund provided care to 71 retired priests, at a cost of £1.25 million. With the number of priests over the age of 65 steadily increasing, so too will the financial obligation to the Archdiocese. This fund continues to provide support to OLHoC former Parish Priest, Fr Roger Nesbitt, and provided vital support to Fr Ed Hartley, former Parish priest at St Joseph’s, until his sad death in May 2020. We have therefore brought forward this Diocesan second collection by one week to enable parishioners attending Sunday Mass at OLHoC and St Joseph’s to contribute. You can also give to this fund by using the collection box on the back wall at the back of the church at OLHoC, which is open throughout the week.
