X THE NEW LITURGICAL YEAR (A) HAS BEGUN FOR 2022-2023 AND WITH IT COMES THE SEASON OF ADVENT. Advent has a twofold character, for it is a time of preparation for the Solemnities of Christmas, in which the First Coming of the Son of God to humanity is remembered, and likewise a time when, by remembrance of this, minds and hearts are led to look forward to Christ’s Second Coming at the end of time.  For these two reasons, Advent is a period of devout and expectant delight.

The new lectionary cycle for Sundays has now begun, that is (A), the year of Matthew.

Advent can be such a busy demanding time, but we encourage you to make some space to reflect and pray this advent. Sign up for our free Southwark Diocesan ‘daily advent reflections’ to aid your prayer.

Every day during advent you will receive an email with a very brief thought for the day based on the daily reading. It is an opportunity to listen to Gods invitation to you this advent. All you have to do is sign up and then set aside a couple of minutes each day to reflect! Sign up via the Commission web site:

Alternatively, if you are viewing this online, you can sign up directly by clicking here: https://southwarkdsc.us11.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=a3e1dce7f8f666e9d64edd867&id=4f880b3b9c

X  SECOND COLLECTIONS – last Sunday’s second collection for Youth Sunday and the Catholic Youth Services raised £234.44. Thank you for your generosity. Next week’s second collection is for the Christmas flowers at both churches in the parish.

X ENJOY SINGING? “We are looking for new members for the 11.00am choir and for the Christmas and Easter periods. Anyone, of any age, and any ability who likes to sing, is welcome. Choir practice is 7.00pm on Friday nights at OLHoC Hall. Come and join in and have some fun with the OLHoC 11.00am singers!

X CHILDREN’S LITURGY AT 11AM MASS - starting this Sunday, 27th November 2022 and every Sunday thereafter.  The children will be invited by Fr Alex, at the appropriate time, to accompany the Catechists to the Hall for their liturgy. They will take part in religious activities designed specifically for children.  All children of any age up to the age of 8 are invited. A parent or guardian must accompany children below 5 years. The liturgy will last for 25 minutes, and they will rejoin their parents in the Church for the rest of the Mass.

Bring your children along!

X BEACON PLUS COMMUNITY CAFE – the Beacon Plus would like to extend a big thank you to all who have tried out the Community Café based in the OLHoC Hall from 9.30am to 2.30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. This facility offers breakfast from 10am, lunches including toasties and soup and pizzas on Friday.

The cost of a tea or coffee is just £1 and includes free refills and offers a warm space for those that need it during the cold winter days.

The project is for 19-25 year olds to gain valuable work experience whilst offering an affordable option for local residents to meet up and have a drink and something to eat. It is a fantastic learning opportunity for the learners as this is their business, overseen by a full time member of staff. Why not pop along after Mass or call in on your way to or from town and support this fantastic community project.

We will be looking to extend the Connect Club for the wise and mature which takes place on the first Monday of the month at St Joseph’s (next one is Monday 5th December) to also take place regularly at OLHoC on a weekly basis. The next scheduled Connect Club will be on Monday 5th December at St Joseph’s Hall. Speak to George Pound for further information about Connect Club at St Joseph’s or plans for OLHoC.

X THE POPE’S PRAYER INTENTION FOR DECEMBER 2022 IS FOR VOUNTEER NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANISATION. We pray that volunteer non-profit organizations committed to human development find people dedicated to the common good and ceaselessly seek out new paths to international cooperation.

X  PARISH RECONCILLIATION SERVICE will be taking place on Saturday 10th December at 4pm at Our Lady, Help of Christians and St Aloysius.

X PARISH ADVENT COURSE: The Joy of Hope on Thursdays during Advent in the Hall at OLHoC from 7.00pm - 8.30pm.

It is the perfect  antidote to the winter blues!  A 4-session DVD course filmed on the Greek island of Patmos and entitled The Joy of Hope.  Guaranteed to give you a spiritual boost for the season of Advent!  Come and join us!  Our four topics are

      Do not be afraid

The best is yet to come

      Heaven on Earth

      The river of life

X REMEMBRANCE AND BEREAVEMENT - the first meeting of the Bereavement Support and Remembrance Group will meet on Saturday 17 December at 1.00pm in Our Lady Help of Christians Church Hall. All are welcome and if you can bring a momento of your loved one that you would like to speak about please do so.

X PLEASE PRAY FOR THE REPOSE OF THE SOULS of Paul Rynehart, John McPartlin who died recently and for all those whose anniversaries fall at this time, including amongst them: Bridget Hunt, Annie Cork (27th Nov); Josephine Taylor (28th Nov); Michael Woods, Marguerite Faucompre, Rose Bray (29th Nov); Emily Sumner (30th Nov); Anthony Reddington, Douglas Watts (1st Dec); Peter Patton, Margaret Westall, Florence Sharpe (2nd Dec); Jose Scheirs, Alice Stanley (3rd Dec); Raymond Charsley, Gertrude Peat, Charles Birch, Alice Gregory, Florence Tinney, Thomas Noble (4th Dec).

X DAY OF PRAYER FOR MIGRANTS is on Saturday 3rd December. It’s a year since the tragic deaths of 27 migrants in the English Channel – the worst-ever migrant tragedy in that body of water. Bishop Paul McAleenan, the Lead Bishop for Migrants and Refugees, has offered his prayers for the victims and their families, stressing that we have a “collective responsibility” to uphold the human dignity of migrants and refugees.

“As Catholics, we recognise the value and sanctity of every human life. We pray for those who died on their journey to a hoped-for new life, may they rest in peace. We pray too for their families and all those forced from their homelands and we recommit ourselves to the Holy Father’s plea to welcome, protect, promote, and integrate all those seeking a home in our communities.”
