X TAKE YOUR FAMILY TO CHURCH THIS LENT - Churches are safe and the doors are “wide open,” says Cardinal Vincent Nichols as we prepare to celebrate the prayerful season of Lent. In a message to Catholic school pupils [and all Catholics], Cardinal Nichols stresses the importance of “coming into the presence of God” to “join in fully in the prayer of the Mass.”

The Cardinal encourages young people to be part of the parish community – a family of the faith. “When we come [to Mass], we receive the gifts of God. We receive His compassion, we receive His love. We come to know how to serve others and to give to them what we receive from the Lord.”

X GIFT AID ENVELOPES - the new Gift Aid envelopes for 2022/23 are now ready and available for collection from the back of the church. Thank you to everyone who has signed up to Gift Aid. We get an additional 25% back from the taxman for your donations and this makes a huge difference to the parish’s income. Thank you for your continued generosity.

If you are a taxpayer, and currently give to the Church using any method, but don’t currently use Gift Aid, can I urge you to start using Gift Aid. It is very simple and more details can be obtained by speaking to Dylan or emailing folkestone@rcaos.org.uk

A CANDLE AND A PRAYER FOR UKRAINE - We look on with horror and dismay as events unfold in Ukraine; the need for peace is imperative.  On Saturday 12th March at Our Lady, Help of Christians, from 12.30pm to 4.00pm, you are all invited (as well as passers-by) to drop in for a moment of prayer and to light a candle for peace in Ukraine; there’ll be gentle music and a prayerful ambience as we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with all our sisters and brothers who yearn for peace.

Volunteers will also be opening the Hall throughout for tea, coffee and a chat from 12.30pm to 4.00pm this Saturday, so please come along.

St Vladimir of Kyiv, pray for us!

A PRAYER FOR UKRAINE

Loving God,
We pray for the people of Ukraine,
for all those suffering or afraid,
that you will be close to them and protect them.

We pray for world leaders,
for compassion, strength and wisdom to guide their choices.

We pray for the world
that in this moment of crisis,
we may reach out in solidarity
to our brothers and sisters in need.

May we walk in your ways
so that peace and justice
become a reality for the people of Ukraine
and for all the world.

Amen.

X 2021 ACCOUNTS SUMMARY – the 2021 Financial Accounts were presented to the Finance and Maintenance Committee held on 24th February 2022.

The past few years have seen a huge amount of work carried out in the parish on the refurbishment and redecoration and general maintenance of our church halls, our two churches and the presbyteries. As with all old buildings, they have required lots if TLC and we are gradually getting them, one by one, to a state of needing less urgent work on them. The headline is that we have spent a lot of money over the past four years and will continue to do so over the next 12 months. Our reserves are almost exhausted and we are now relying on the continued generosity of all of you to meet the costs of making our parish a place for continued worship for all Catholics and the whole of our community.

X ACCESS TO THE SACRAMENTS AND HOLY COMMUNIONmany have recently been asking why they cannot receive the Sacrament if they have been Baptised as Christians. The Prayer and Liturgy Directory [OF the Bishops’ Conference], under section 4.4.3.2 explains:

Here great sensitivity is required because other Christian denominations follow inter-denominational liturgical disciplines that differ from that of the Catholic Church. For example, the Church of England admits all baptised Christians who are in good standing with their own church – irrespective of denomination – to Holy Communion, whereas the Catholic Church generally only admits those who are in full communion with it.

The rationale behind Catholic teaching on full communion is that unity in faith and unity in sacramental practice go together. The unity between the Catholic Church and other denominations is not complete: we do not agree with each other about how the Church should be structured and what it believes, and until those differences are resolved the Catholic Church holds that full communion between Christians is not possible. The Liturgy expresses what the Church is and what it believes, and therefore, for Christians of other denominations to receive Holy Communion at Mass or sacramental absolution at a service of Reconciliation is not possible.

It is the teaching of the Church, therefore, that the exercise of liturgical ministries should be carried out by those who are in full communion with the Catholic Church. Consequently, other Christians should not be invited to exercise ministries such as reading from the Scriptures during the celebration of the Sacraments.
