X FR FRANCIS CAPENER RIP (1930-2022)  – I went to see Fr Francis Capener in his new home on Friday 8th July 2022. We prayed together and he received Holy Communion. My visit lasted from around 3.00pm until 4.00pm. When I left him, I let him know that I would be back in a week’s time.

From there I went to see a parishioner who is in another home in the area. I came back to the Presbytery at 5.00pm and about 5.20pm I received a phone call from the home to inform me that Fr Capener had passed away. I returned to say the Prayer After Death with him – Fr Francis Capener’s last meal on earth before dying was Holy Communion. He has been reunited with his Saviour. His wish to be hidden in the wounds of his Saviour has been granted – may he Rest in Peace and rise in Glory.

Fr Capener left the world a happy man at peace with the Lord.

X SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION PROGRAMME FOR 2022-2023 - if you, or one of your family, relatives of friends, is thinking about enrolling for any of the sacramental programmes which will begin in October 2022 for the celebration of the Sacrament in 2023, the time has come for enrolment. The Sacraments in question are:

  • First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion
  • Confirmation
  • Rite of Christian Initiation for Baptism of Adults.

Each category will have its preparation sessions covering the period from October 2022- May/June 2023. Forms for enrolment are now at the back of the church.

FORMS ARE AT THE BACK OF THE CHURCH AND THE DEADLINE FOR ALL THESE ENROLMENTS IS FRIDAY 16th SEPTEMBER.

X SEA SUNDAY SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND FOR STELLA MARIS: THE APOSTLESHIP OF THE SEA. The Apostleship of the Sea (AoS) is a Catholic Charity supporting seafarers worldwide.

They provide practical and pastoral care to all seafarers regardless of nationality or belief. Port Chaplains and volunteer ship visitors welcome seafarers, offer welfare service and advice, practical help, care and friendship. The AoS in Great Britain is part of an international network known to the maritime world as Stella Maris, working in more than 250 ports around the world. 90% of world trade is transported by ship, however the life of a modern seafarer can be dangerous and lonely. They may spend up to a year at a time away from their family and loved ones and often working in harsh conditions.

The AoS relies wholly on voluntary contributions, and can only continue its work through the generous donations of its supporters, particularly this collection. This is an important collection for our area as we have the port of Dover nearby and can see so many people plying their trade as they go on their jounreys through the English Channel. Please give what you can.

X OLHoC NEW CARPETS – the new carpet for the Altar and Sacristy at OLHoC has now been ordered to replace the very worn and threadbare carpet that is currently in use. This will be the first time in many decades that the carpet has been renewed and there was quite a shock when we discovered the original colour hidden away from view.

Following extensive consultation with parishioners, the final colour has been agreed by Fr Alex and will be Lithuanian Lime, a very nice shade of light green, which compliments the new and existing liturgical colours that we use.

The installation will involve the removal of the existing carpet, removal of the electricity cables and hearing loop to be put down again afterwards, skimming the concrete and floor and then cutting and fitting the new carpet. It will take place on 15-18 August.

The cost of the new carpet has been generously supported by grants received from ward councillors in Broadmead and Folkestone Central on Folkestone and Hythe District Council and a very generous donation from a parishioner to cover the remaining cost, for which we offer our sincere gratitude for your generosity.

X PETERS PENCE – July is the month of Peter’s Pence. This raises funds to enable Pope Francis to exercise works of mercy and charity, to support the Church needs, to humanitarian initiatives and social promotion projects, as well as to support the Holy See. A box is available for your small donations at the back of each church.

X PLEASE PRAY FOR THOSE WHO ARE SICK, IN HOSPITAL OR RECOVERING FROM ILLNESS, SURGERY OR TREATMENT including Margaret Woolley, Francis Dunn, Lilian Orfila, Beulah Blomfield, Margaret Murphy and Pam Boxall.

X HYTHE, FOLKESTONE AND DOVER  SPUC BRANCH have reconvened after various obstacles COVID based and have a meeting on Monday 18th July starting at 7.30pm at 1 Ormonde Road, Hythe CT21 6DN c/o Geraldine Harrison.

X OUR PARISH COMMITTEES - the Parish is now organised into four committees to assist the Priest in his work:

  • Finance & Property Committee – co-chaired by Andre Kleinman and John Devine.
  • Liturgy Committee – chaired by Patrick Davies with Vice Chair Terry Houlahan.
  • Social & Pastoral Committee – chaired by Chi Davies with Vice Chair Ann Berry.
  • Evangelisation & Formation Committee – chaired by John Philpott with Vice Chair Chi Davies.

We could also invite interested and suitable (possessing relevant skills, experience and personalities and committed to the continued development of a single unified Parish) Parishioners to indicate their interest to join any of the committees to the Parish Preist. Whilst also inviting Parishioners generally to use the folkestone@rcaos.org.uk email mechanism to make suggestions or to have topics raised at the next relevant Committee meeting.

X SUMMERTIME 2022: 2ND TO 5TH AUGUST.  For altar servers  aged 11 – 17. The venue is the oratory school in Reading, and coach transport is available from two venues. Total Cost £199. Forms are available from the website

www.stanselmsdartford.wordpress.com or email dartford@rcaos.org.uk.

It is a brilliant few days of prayer and recreation. The Archbishop will be opening Summertime 2022 with Mass. For more details contact Fr. Stephen Boyle, chaplain to the Guild of St. Stephen: Tel: 01322 220075.

X URGENT HEATING WORKS – during the summer months we tend to forget about the heating, and the problems we experienced over last winter, particularly at St Joseph’s. The Parish’s Finance and Property Committee have approved works at both churches to flush through the heating systems, and to replace the damaged part at St Joseph’s. This should lead to improved heating over the winter months and mean that the radiators at St Joseph’s and Our Lady actually get considerably hotter than they currently are able to achieve due to sludge and other deposits in the system.

Having sought quotations for the work, we have opted to go with Boiler Healthcare at a cost of £3,360 including VAT.  Full details of the money raised at the second collection, other donations and the proceeds of the BBQ at St Joseph’s, will be published in next week’s newsletter.

You can also donate via cheque payable to “RCAS Folkestone” and placed an envelope marked ‘Heating Works Appeal’ and posted through the Parish Office door at the Presbytery at 41 Guildhall Street on any day or via bank transfer to RCAS Folkestone, Sort Code 52-41-42 and Account Number 08605556 with the reference ‘Heating’. Any donations are also eligible for Gift Aid.

Alternatively, you can use our Just Giving page online, a link is on our parish website, which allows for payments to be made by credit and debit card or by PayPal with no fees at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/olsj-folkestone

If you would like to pledge your support for the parish through regular planned giving, a form is available at the back of the church for you to return to the Parish Secretary at Our Lady and St Joseph, The Catholic Presbytery, 41 Guildhall Street, Folkestone CT20 1EF.

X RIDE AND STRIDE is a fundraiser for church buildings.  It happens each year in September and is a nationwide initiative. This year's will be on Saturday, 10th September.

Riders and Striders walk or cycle their chosen routes around Kent churches. They sign in at each church visited and hopefully receive refreshment from a team of welcomers.

Our Lady and St Joseph's have been partakers for a few years now, putting up Riders and Striders and Welcomers. 50% of a parish's money raised is returned to the parish, the other 50% goes to a fund from which maintenance grants are made for fabric repairs.  Please consider playing a part by Riding and Striding, Welcoming, Sponsoring or Praying.

More info and sponsor forms from Sara at OL, or Steve at St J, or see www.kentrideandstride.co.uk.

It will be led by parish volunteers who are fully DBS checked and it will include lunch, snacks and many activities including dancing, music, singing, crafts, cooking, gardening, writing, games, basic first aid training, films and more.  We have also received the wonderful news that teachers and staff from Stella Maris and Folkestone School for Girls will be assisting with the activities.
